Geostrategic Evaluation of the Morphological Elements of the Jordanian State: An Applied Study in Geopolitics

Abstract

This study is an applied study in geopolitics, the purpose of which is to conduct a geostrategic assessment of the geographical morphological elements of the Jordanian state, namely: location, area, shape, boundaries, and geographical depth. These variables affect the state’s policy and strategies, and its regional and international relations. The descriptive analytical approach was used to describe the morphological elements and analyze their effects on Jordanian policies and strategies. A quadruple SWOT analysis was used to compare the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that face the Jordanian state. The quantitative method was also used to extract the shape constraint, the marine parameter, and the boundary density. The study concluded that the morphological variables of the Jordanian state, chiefly the geographical location, have a clear impact on the nature of its decisions. The country's astronomical and relative position gave it a geostrategic importance that made it difficult to bypass, when making any decisions related to the region. Despite the small size of the state, which is one of the factors of its weakness, it gave it the power of the articulating state, which contributes to the formation of regional policies, and influences international decision-making related to the region.
