Abstract

This study sheds light on the commercial relations between the Kingdom of Aragon and the Hafsid State during the reign of King James II (689-727 AH/1291-1327 AD) in the context of the peace treaties between the two parties and the diplomatic correspondence exchanged between them. It examines the contents of these treaties, which included provisions regulating the commercial relations between the two states, highlighting the main axes of the research topic: the security and safety enjoyed by the merchants, customs taxes, the residence of merchants, exports and imports, and judiciary matters between traders. The study concluded with a number of findings: both the Aragonese and Hafsid states provided security and safety for the merchants in the Mediterranean Sea and their ports through the peace treaties, and specified the location of the merchants’ residence in the hostel. The Marine Diwan was the administrative and financial institution in the ports overseeing commercial operations and collecting customs taxes.
