تَشَكَّلَ المجتمع النجدي من مزيج من البادية والحاضرة، وعلى الرغم من وجودهما في المنطقة نفسها وتعايشهما فإنَّ طبيعة كل منهما تختلف عن الآخر؛ فقد اعتاد المجتمع البدوي على الترحال الدائم بحثًا عن الموارد والمياه التي يحتاج إليها في حياته، واتّسمت حياتهم بالتنافس المستمرّ وكثرة الحركة والتنقلات وعدم الاستقرار نتيجة للنزاعات الدائمة التي يتسلّط فيها القويُّ على الضعيف. وتميل حواضر نجد إلى الاستقرار حول الأمكنة التي تتوافر فيها مصادر المياه اللازمة لقيام الزراعة والعمران، أو لعوامل أخرى تؤثّر في اختيار المكان كوقوعه على طرق القوافل، ولكنها كانت هي الأخرى عرضة للصدام مع القبائل الصحراوية وتدخلاتها المستمرة. ظلّت القوة هي الفيصل في التعايش بين مكوّنات المجتمع المحلي في نجد، فنشأت بينهم صدامات ووقعات عدّة وشبه يومية، ألقت بأثرها البالغ على الحياة هناك، وكانت دافعًا قويًّا لتدخّل القوى المجاورة في شأنها المحلي؛ بغية إخضاع تلك القبائل أو تأمين طرق التجارة وحماية الحجاج التابعين لتلك القوى، فتعرّضت نجد إلى حملات كبيرة من هاتين القوتين في الحجاز وفي شرق الجزيرة، أسهمت في إعاقة النهوض العمراني والاقتصادي والزراعي من خلال كثرة تدخّلات القبائل في حياة المدن والقرى وإضعافها أو تخريبها تمامًا. تلا ذلك ظهور قوة الدولة السعودية الأولى عام 1139هـ/ 1727م كقوة سياسية، وتنامي تأثيرها وهيمنتها في وسط الجزيرة العربية، فتمكّنت من إعادة التوازن السياسي في المنطقة، وفرضت هيبتها وحضورها على القوى الداخلية في المنطقة والقوى المحيطة بها.
