Food Security and Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture

Brief Description

Food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture are essential components that contribute significantly to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Jordan and many countries worldwide. Achieving these goals is a great challenge at the national, regional, and international levels, especially in light of increasing climate change and environmental disturbances, water scarcity, declining soil fertility, land fragmentation and environmental degradation, urban expansion, legislation and economic factors, and rising demand for food due to population growth.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a globally shared plan that calls for peace and prosperity for all people. Focusing on food security and nutrition seeks to "end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture."  These themes also "relate to responsible consumption and production, mitigate climate change, promote eco-friendly farming methods, reduce the environmental footprint, and ensure the long-term sustainability of food production systems." Furthermore, sustainable agriculture is vital in "fostering biodiversity, safeguarding ecosystems, preserving the natural environment, improving soil health, and enhancing water use efficiency." In turn, "food security, better nutrition, and improved health and well-being lead to enhanced educational outcomes, given the known links between nutrition and cognitive development."

It is worth noting that there is a nexus between food security, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, poverty, hygiene, and economic growth, among other issues. Sustainable agriculture creates job opportunities, thus reducing poverty levels. Proper water and sanitation practices in agriculture can prevent contamination, ensuring clean water and sanitation for all. Therefore, "the triad of food security, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture, while being a significant goal in itself, is also a vehicle that drives the achievement of the wider Sustainable Development Goals."
