This study presents the meaning and purpose of baptism by highlighting the places where baptism and purification were practiced in the Byzantine Period at the site of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, on the east bank of the Jordan River. The article identifies natural springs where baptism and purification rites were practiced, such as the Ainon Spring, and also the architectural structures of basins and wells to collect water. The purpose of its design was to conduct a baptism rite for those who wanted to convert to the Christian religion. The article also defines the rite of baptism linguistically and idiomatically, and presents the accounts of historians and travellers that dealt with the baptism sites during the Byzantine period.
